Female Comediennes of the Silent Screen

Chaplin and His Impersonators (DVD)
The Count (1916, B&W): The Real McCoy, Sir Charlie himself, stars in this classic short as an inept apprentice tailor who makes a shambles of an elegant dinner party. Highlights include Chaplin's acrobatic dancing and an elaborate chase and brawl with the cake-throwing, bottom-kicking Little Tramp at the top of his comedic form. Starring Charlie Chaplin, Eric Campbell, Edna Purviance, Tiny Sandford, Leo White; Directed by Charlie Chaplin.

Don't Be Foolish (1922, B&W): The best and most famous of the Chaplin imitators, Billy West, is at his comic peak in this frantic tale of a park litterbug whose luck goes from bad to worse: chased by angry cops, and wooed by a spinster homely enough to make an onion cry. Even a brief respite in the apartment of a pretty girl turns sour: She's the wife of the angriest of poor Billy's police pursuers! Starring Billy West, Frank Hayes, Tom Murray; Directed by Billy West.

Heaven Will Protect A Woiking Goil (1916, B&W):
Heaven Will Protect a Woiking Goil Heaven Will Protect the Working Girl
A country girl goes searching for her missing drunkard father in the big city in this slapstick extravaganza, with roughhouse action taking place in shops, offices and atop a moving train. The lunacy culminates in grand silent movie tradition with hero and heroine tied to the railroad tracks. Starring Paddy McGuire, Priscilla Dean, Russ Powell, Arthur Moon, Louise Owen; Directed by John Francis Dillon.
Chaplin and His Impersonators, Volume 2 (DVD)
Charlie Chaplin was so popular in the dawning days of his movie career that lookalikes began imitating him on stages and movie screens worldwide. This compilation brings together several of these penguin-walking pretenders, plus a look at the genuine article (Chaplin himself) in one of his rarest shorts.

Triple Trouble (1918): Charlie Chaplin gets a job as a janitor in the Nutt house, home of a scientist whose new explosive is sought by foreign agents.
Don't Park Here (1920): A pretty girl is loved by TWO gents who resemble the Little Tramp--and one of them hopes to impress her by battling a gang of auto thieves. Written and directed by Charley Chase.
Cupid's Rival (1917): Among the Chaplin copycats, Billy West was top dog. Here he plays a janitor in a hotel whose guests include artist Oliver Hardy... who appears in drag!
Deaf, Dumb and Blonde (1928): In the Big City, a country boy (played by circus bareback rider Poodles Hanneford) sets out to earn $500 with which to marry a beautiful blonde--unaware that she's GOT a beau and they're both jailbreakers.

Collegiate Comedies (Silent)
MATCHMAKING MAMA (1929, B&W, Silent): Social climbing Mrs. McNitt is determined to destroy the budding romance between millionaire scion Larry Lodge and sweet Sally. McNitt has earmarked the hand of the eligible young bachelor for her sexy daughter, Phyllis. This hilarious short features a ravishing young Carole Lombard and wild Technicolor scenes with the Sennett Bathing Beauties. Starring Carole Lombard, Daphne Pollard, Sally Eilers, Johnny Burke, Matty Kemp; Directed by Harry Edwards.

THE CAMPUS VAMP (1928, B&W, Silent): A concerned mother admonishes her young bookworm daughter Sally that she had better "sex-up" her act if she is to have any chance of landing handsome bachelor Matty. Mother then proceeds to instruct Sally on how to be a vamp. Starring Carole Lombard, Daphne Pollard, Johnny Burke, Sally Eilers, Matty Kemp; Directed by Harry Edwards.

THE RELAY (1926, B&W, Silent): When the freshman girls beat the sophomores in the big relay, resentment builds on the campus. At the big dance, tension between the classes erupts into an all-out melee that won't end until nubile young coeds are hurled into swimming pools! Starring George Lewis, Dorothy Gulliver, Eddie Philips, Churchill Ross; Directed by Wesley Ruggles.

Crazy Car Comedies:
In the earliest days of film, one of the most popular genres was the "car comedy." Automobiles were novelties for many folks at the beginning of the 20th century, so movie audiences were thrilled by all the wild antics of outrageous drivers and passengers careening down the road in cars, trucks, paddy wagons and fire engines.
This collection showcases early Hollywood silent gems by masters of their craft. Mack Sennett (creator of the Keystone Kops style of comedy) and his rival Hal Roach (who later brought Laurel & Hardy and the Our Gang series to the screen) produced the first three shorts presented here. The fourth film featured here is a rarely seen documentary of the very first Indianapolis 500-mile auto race, in 1911.
Super-Hooper-Dyne Lizzies (1925): In this surreal Mack Sennett production, an inventor's amazing radio-controlled cars cause nothing but chaos for their owners and just about everyone else. Starring Billy Bevan, Andy Clyde; Directed by Del Lord; Written by Frank Capra.
Don't Park There! (1924): Hal Roach presents Will Rogers in this slap-stick tale of a very inexperienced driver desperately searching for a parking space as he shops for his wife's bottle of "horse liniment. Starring Will Rogers; Directed by Fred Guiol.
Wife and Auto Trouble (1916): A henpecked husband buys a fancy car for his sexy secretary. He gets into trouble with the law after his wife, who assumes the gift was for her, is arrested for auto theft. Starring William Collier, Mae Busch; Directed by Mack Sennett & Dell Henderson.
The First 500-Mile Indianapolis Speedway Race (1911): This fascinating documentary of the very first Indy 500 auto race was filmed in 1911, when two men rode in each vehicle. One driver, Ray Harroun, rode solo, winning the race against the objections of his two-man competition.

Hal Roach Comedy Classics:
Long Fliv The King (1921): Beautiful Princess Helga must marry within 24 hours or she will lose her throne. Her advisors have her marry Charley, a prisoner condemned to die. A last-minute reprieve spares Charley's life and the newlywed royals head back home, where the new monarch intends to straighten things out in his kingdom.Starring Charley Chase, Martha Sleeper, Oliver Hardy; Directed by Leo McCarey.

Strictly Modern (1922): The Hotel Rundowne is so antiquated it is in danger of going out of business. Snub, the janitor, leads the all-out modernization campaign with Yankee ingenuity and a slew of Rube Goldberg-esque contraptions. Starring Snub Pollard, Marie Mosquini; Directed by William Beaudine.
Start The Show (1920): When a roving theatrical troupe shows up at the farm looking for lodgings, young Beatrice sees an opportunity to raise the mortgage money. She turns the barn into a theater and, before long, has the locals from three counties lined up to buy tickets. Starring Beatrice LaPlante.
Take The Next Car (1922): Trolley operator Paul Parrott must complete his run by a six o'clock deadline or his beautiful boss will lose the franchise. Starring Paul Parrott, Jobyna Ralston; Directed by Jay A. Howe.

Hal Roach Rarities (Silent) (DVD-R)
In the 1920s, legendary Hollywood producer Hal Roach made stars of Harold Lloyd, Charley Chase, Harry Langdon, Thelma Todd, ZaSu Pitts, Patsy Kelly, the Our Gang Kids and Laurel and Hardy. The stature of the Hal Roach Studio was rivaled only by Mack Sennett. This collection is gleaned from that classic era, when Hal Roach was helping define the very nature of American comedy. In 1984, Hal Roach, age 92, received an honorary Academy Award for his contribution to motion pictures.

NORTH OF 50-50 (1924): Human actors are replaced by trained monkeys in this saga of the Northwest Mounted Police. Starring The Dippy-Doo-Dads; Directed by Len Waters.
SURE-MIKE! (1925): A sales clerk at a downtown department store, learns the hard way that her handsome manager is not the Romeo she was expecting. Starring Martha Sleeper, James Finlayson; Directed by Fred Guiol.
THE OLD SEA DOG (1922): Captain "Snub" has one hour to raise a fortune in back-taxes or else he will lose his ferry. With the help of a boatload of bathing beauties, he hatches a brilliant scheme to save the vessel. Starring Snub Pollard, Marie Mosquini; Directed by Charles Parrott.
THE PICKANINNY (1921): A classic example of politically incorrect hi-jinks as Little Casino tries vainly to teach a couple of city-slickers how to fish. Starring "Sunshine" Sammy Morrison; Directed by Robert P. Kerr and James Parrott.

Forgotten Funnymen -Snub Pollard and Bobby Vernon (DVD-R)
Silent star Snub Pollard took his surname from "Pollard's Lilliputian Opera Company," the famous Australian vaudeville act he toured with, which featured children and actors of diminutive stature. With his bizarre trademark mustache, he rose to fame in the silent era, co-starring with Harold Lloyd in Hal Roach's Lonesome Luke comedies, a series which ran for a total of 86 films. He briefly re-emerged in the sound era, appearing as Tex Ritter's sidekick Pee-Wee and in supporting roles in Laurel and Hardy films. Snub continued to work steadily, usually unbilled as a bit player, for the rest of his life, appearing in Miracle On 34th Street (1947), Singin' In The Rain (1952) and Inherit The Wind (1960). Bobby Vernon was a popular leading man and comedian of the silents, who rose to fame starring opposite Gloria Swanson in a series of comic shorts. He made his cinematic mark with what he called his "glass" character, a bespectacled young man intent on achieving his goals despite being faced with countless obstacles. Singer and dancer Bebe Daniels began her show business career at the age of four. As Lloyd's first female costar, Daniels appeared in several years' worth of Lloyd's films before moving on to secure a deal with Paramount, performing in productions such as The Maltese Falcon (1931) and 42nd Street (1933). Harry "Snub" Pollard was an Australian native who toured the U.S. with a vaudeville troupe. After the troupe disbanded, Hal Roach signed him on for Lloyd's "Lonesome Luke" series, which had immense success.

Clark and McCullough: Lost Comedy Classics Collection (DVD-R)
Bobby Clark and Paul McCullough rose through various theatrical circuits to success on Broadway. The comedy team's ability to combine dialogue with physical comedy led to a movie contract with Fox Studios in 1928 and later with RKO Pictures. Five years of near constant performing, however, led to Paul McCullough's nervous breakdown in 1936. Following his release from the sanitarium, McCullough committed suicide. After the loss of his partner of over three decades, Bobby Clark went on to have a notable solo career on Broadway, but he only appeared in one more film. In these RKO shorts, classic slapstick meets with racy dialogue and wacky storylines. McCullough nearly always played a character named Blodgett, while Clark's characters had names that reflected their jobs.

THE DRUGGIST'S DILEMMA (1933): The boys set out to find a new pair of trousers for their employer, who has lost his in a poker game.

THE GAY NIGHTIES (1932): Hired as campaign managers, the boys exploit their political opponent's weakness for pretty women.

KICKIN' THE CROWN AROUND (1933): Clark and McCullough crack down on sausage smugglers during a government ban, leading to a "wurst" case scenario.

SNUG IN THE JUG (1933): A mob boss is ready to kill when he discovers a pair of ex-cons pasting up his wanted poster all over town.

LOVE AND HISSES (1933): The fumbling duo conspire to smuggle an eloping bride past her disapproving mother.

EVERYTHING'S DUCKY (1934): A pair of traveling salesmen cook up lunch to demonstate their dynamic new frying pans, only to discover that they've roasted the family pet.

Leon Errol, Volume 1 (DVD-R)
Leon Errol (1881-1951) was a legend in vaudeville long before he ever set foot on a soundstage. The Australian-born funnyman starred in and directed Ziegfield Follies on Broadway alongside such fellow luminaries as W.C. Fields and Fanny Brice. Hollywood beckoned, and although Errol appeared in such studio features as the all-star Alice in Wonderland (1933) with Gary Cooper and Cary Grant and the classic 1941 Fields' vehicle Never Give A Sucker An Even Break, he found his greatest fame in RKO's popular Mexican Spitfire series co-starring Lupe Velez, in which Errol played the dual roles of Uncle Matt Lindsay and Lord Basil Epping. In Lord Epping Returns, he reprises the role he made famous in the Mexican Spitfire films. Shortly after completing his final short, Too Many Wives (1951), Errol died of a heart attack in Hollywood. He has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

This exclusive collection of 6 vintage comedy shorts from Errol's long-running affiliation with RKO Pictures offers a side-splitting glimpse into the comic magic that entertained millions of moviegoers.
