Crazy Car Comedies:
In the earliest days of film, one of the most popular genres was the "car comedy." Automobiles were novelties for many folks at the beginning of the 20th century, so movie audiences were thrilled by all the wild antics of outrageous drivers and passengers careening down the road in cars, trucks, paddy wagons and fire engines.
This collection showcases early Hollywood silent gems by masters of their craft. Mack Sennett (creator of the Keystone Kops style of comedy) and his rival Hal Roach (who later brought Laurel & Hardy and the Our Gang series to the screen) produced the first three shorts presented here. The fourth film featured here is a rarely seen documentary of the very first Indianapolis 500-mile auto race, in 1911.

The First 500-Mile Indianapolis Speedway Race (1911): This fascinating documentary of the very first Indy 500 auto race was filmed in 1911, when two men rode in each vehicle. One driver, Ray Harroun, rode solo, winning the race against the objections of his two-man competition.

Long Fliv The King (1921): Beautiful Princess Helga must marry within 24 hours or she will lose her throne. Her advisors have her marry Charley, a prisoner condemned to die. Hal Roach Rarities (Silent) (DVD-R)
In the 1920s, legendary Hollywood producer Hal Roach made stars of Harold Lloyd, Charley Chase, Harry Langdon, Thelma Todd, ZaSu Pitts, Patsy Kelly, the Our Gang Kids and Laurel and Hardy. The stature of the Hal Roach Studio was rivaled only by Mack Sennett. This collection is gleaned from that classic era, when Hal Roach was helping define the very nature of American comedy. In 1984, Hal Roach, age 92, received an honorary Academy Award for his contribution to motion pictures.
NORTH OF 50-50 (1924): Human actors are replaced by trained monkeys in this saga of the Northwest Mounted Police. Starring The Dippy-Doo-Dads; Directed by Len Waters.

Forgotten Funnymen -Snub Pollard and Bobby Vernon (DVD-R)
Silent star Snub Pollard took his surname from "Pollard's Lilliputian Opera Company," the famous Australian vaudeville act he toured with, which featured children and actors of diminutive stature. With his bizarre trademark mustache, he rose to fame in the silent era, co-starring with Harold Lloyd in Hal Roach's Lonesome Luke comedies, a series which ran for a total of 86 films. He briefly re-emerged in the sound era, appearing as Tex Ritter's sidekick Pee-Wee and in supporting roles in Laurel and Hardy films. Snub continued to work steadily, usually unbilled as a bit player, for the rest of his life, appearing in Miracle On 34th Street (1947), Singin' In The Rain (1952) and Inherit The Wind (1960). Bobby Vernon was a popular leading man and comedian of the silents, who rose to fame starring opposite Gloria Swanson in a series of comic shorts. With the advent of sound he became a writer and supervisor at Paramount where he worked with W.C. Fields and Bing Crosby.
NO KIDDING (1928): Snub and his pal plan to win $1,000 in a baby contest. Starring Snub Pollard, Marvin Loback, Billy Barty.
BEFORE THE PUBLIC (1923): Snub triumphantly returns to his hometown as a western movie star. Impressed with his screen heroics, the town elects Snub to ride Nitro in the horse show. Starring Snub Pollard, Noah Young, James Finlayson; Directed by Charley Chase (as Charles Parrott).

Lost Comedy Classics:
The Stage Hand (1933): The little town of Oskaloosa is presenting a community play to raise money for a new fire engine but, as a title card indicates: "They didn't realize what they were in for..." Despite a series of missteps and escalating calamities both on and off-stage, the show must go on ? but it's a certainty that Oskaloosa's going to need a new fire engine before the final curtain! Legendary screen funnyman Harry Langdon co-wrote, directed and stars in the title role of this side-splitting comedy short.
Dangerous Females (1929): Stars Marie Dressler (in her only sound short) and Polly Moran as best friends convinced that an escaped criminal is stalking them. The next year, Dressler would star opposite Wallace Beery in Min and Bill and win the Academy Award as Best Actress.
Our Dare-Devil Chief (1915): This early Keystone Comedies short stars Ford Sterling as a bumbling police chief trying to nab The Triple Gang. Starring Ford Sterling, Al St. John.
Lost Comedy Classics, Volume 2 (Silent) (DVD-R)
Often called the "Third Genius" in the tradition of slapstick comedy made famous by Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd was a prolific comedic actor who helmed close to 200 movies during his career. He made his cinematic mark with what he called his "glass" character, a bespectacled young man intent on achieving his goals despite being faced with countless obstacles. Singer and dancer Bebe Daniels began her show business career at the age of four. As Lloyd's first female costar, Daniels appeared in several years' worth of Lloyd's films before moving on to secure a deal with Paramount, performing in productions such as The Maltese Falcon (1931) and 42nd Street (1933). Harry "Snub" Pollard was an Australian native who toured the U.S. with a vaudeville troupe. After the troupe disbanded, Hal Roach signed him on for Lloyd's "Lonesome Luke" series, which had immense success.
All Aboard (1917): When his sweetheart is suddenly forced into an arranged marriage and dragged onto a cruise ship headed for the Bahamas, Harold tags along, managing to get onboard by hiding in the couple's trunk.
Step Lively (1917): Simple-minded Harold foils a robbery with the help of his new-found friend, a vicious dog.
Ask Father (1919): Harold is determined to marry the woman he loves, but her father is much too busy at the office to give him the time of day to request his permission.
Ring Up The Curtain (1919): Mishaps abound at the local opera house when a traveling acting troupe arrives in town to put on a performance.
Bumping Into Broadway (1919): Harold and Bebe encounter numerous obstacles as they attempt to make it big on Broadway.
Chop Suey & Co. (1919): A New York cop who's sent to Chinatown perfects his chopsticks skills.

Laffin Gas (1914): Charlie Chaplin directs and stars as a dental assistant who causes nothing but trouble when he impersonates the dentist.
Face on the Barroom Floor (1914): Charlie Chaplin is a lovesick artist who drowns his sorrow in a local bar.
Post No Bills (1923): Paul Parrott, the younger brother of Charley Chase, stars in this Hal Roach short as a mischievoustheater worker tasked with posting the bills for the upcoming show.
Prince Pistachio (1921): A gas explosion blows a plumber all the way to Persia, where he is mistaken for a great prince. Starring Eddie Boland.

The Fraidy Cat (1924): This Hal Roach production stars screen legend Charley Chase as Jimmy Jump, an avowed coward scared of everything in town. Even the neighborhood children, played by the "Our Gang" kids, terrorize him. But when Jimmy meets the girl of his dreams, even a coward sometimes finds the courage to make his heart known.
Half Back Hannah (1928): Anne Cornwall strikes an early blow for feminism in the title role, leading an all-girl freshman football team against the sophomores in a no-holds-barred contest. Stick Around (1925): Oliver Hardy and Bobby Day are hired to wallpaper a sanitarium where the staff is nuttier than the patients. Both are so busy trying to make time with a flirtatious nurse that neither realizes they've accidentally brought the wrong wallpaper. Starring Oliver "Babe" Hardy and Bobby Day.
Alkali Ike's Auto (1911): Augustus Carney a clumsy cowpoke, gets behind the wheel of a "horseless carriage" and causes chaos on and off the road. Written, produced and directed by the legendary "Broncho Billy" Anderson. Starring Augustus Carney.

THOSE AWFUL HATS (1909): The legendary D. W. Griffith wrote and directed this "friendly reminder" for ladies to remove their hats when they go to the movies, lest they themselves be removed from the premises! Filmmaker Mack Sennett appears in this short.
SNOOKY'S FRESH HEIR (1921): Snooky the chimp decides to take the family on a trip to the beach.
AT THE RINGSIDE (1917): Policeman Snub Pollard agrees to participate in a boxing match, but he doesn't realize the fight is rigged until it's too late. Also stars "Sunshine Sammy" Morrison; directed by Charley Chase.

His horrified sister acts quickly to make sure that the nuptials will never take place. Starring John Bunny, Flora Finch.
J-U-N-K - Excelsior Film Co. (1920): The junk man cashes in his life-savings in a valiant scheme to romance an heiress. Posing as a Count he is invited to her exclusive soiree where he takes on all rivals for her affections. Starring Hank Mann, Madge Kirby, Vernon Dent.
THERE IT IS - Bowers Comedy Corp. (1927): Mr. Frisbie believes his home is haunted by a mysterious phantom and calls in Scotland Yard to investigate. This comedy features an astonishing stop-motion animation segment. Starring Charley Bowers, Kathryn McGuire.
Slapstick Rides Again:
This volume of silent comedies features the works of lesser-known, yet popular, comedic stars of the era. All had backgrounds comparable to Chaplin or Keaton. Producers felt they had a good chance for similar success and providing audiences with solid, audience-tested talents and entertainment.
Playing Horse (1915): Nervous about his upcoming marriage, Billy runs away to join a vaudeville show. Stars Billie Reeves; Directed by Arthur Hotaling.
All Lit Up (1920): Snub spends a day in the park chasing butterflies but manages to catch a beautiful young girl instead. Stars Snub Pollard, "Sunshine" Sammy Morrison; Directed by Fred C. Newmeyer.

His Private Life (1926, B&W, Silent): Millionaire Reggie enlists in the Army to impress his fiance. His worst nightmare comes true when he learns that his former butler is now his drill sergeant. Lupino Lane was descended from a distinguished London acting family. His comedic and considerable acrobatic skills made him a slapstick triumph on Broadway and later in the silents. In His Private Life he is ably directed by a post-scandal "Fatty" Arbuckle. Stars Lupino Lane and Virginia Vance.
The Doughboy (1926, B&W, Silent): Bumbling infantryman Snub Pollard is released upon the Kaiser's hordes! Stumbling his way behind German lines, he unintentionally leaves a trail of devastation and chaos behind, swiftly bringing the enemy to their knees. This well-preserved print is an example of Snub Pollard's work at the Weiss Brothers' studio, after having parted ways with Hal Roach. Directed by James D. Davis.
The Flying Ace (1925, B&W, Silent): Hapless Private Billy manages to raise himself from KP duty to flying ace. He proceeds to wreak havoc on the German Air Force, and return home a hero! Stars Billy Bevan, Madeline Hurlock, Andy Clyde, and Sunshine Hart. Directed by Arthur Rosson.

A rare animated advertising film promoting the sale of Christmas Seals. There are no credits or information in vintage trade publications, but animation historians have attributed the graphic blandishments to Fleischer animator Dick Huemer.

Clark and McCullough: Lost Comedy Classics Collection (DVD-R)
Bobby Clark and Paul McCullough rose through various theatrical circuits to success on Broadway. The comedy team's ability to combine dialogue with physical comedy led to a movie contract with Fox Studios in 1928 and later with RKO Pictures. Five years of near constant performing, however, led to Paul McCullough's nervous breakdown in 1936. Following his release from the sanitarium, McCullough committed suicide. After the loss of his partner of over three decades, Bobby Clark went on to have a notable solo career on Broadway, but he only appeared in one more film. In these RKO shorts, classic slapstick meets with racy dialogue and wacky storylines. McCullough nearly always played a character named Blodgett, while Clark's characters had names that reflected their jobs.
THE DRUGGIST'S DILEMMA (1933): The boys set out to find a new pair of trousers for their employer, who has lost his in a poker game.
THE GAY NIGHTIES (1932): Hired as campaign managers, the boys exploit their political opponent's weakness for pretty women.
KICKIN' THE CROWN AROUND (1933): Clark and McCullough crack down on sausage smugglers during a government ban, leading to a "wurst" case scenario.
SNUG IN THE JUG (1933): A mob boss is ready to kill when he discovers a pair of ex-cons pasting up his wanted poster all over town.
LOVE AND HISSES (1933): The fumbling duo conspire to smuggle an eloping bride past her disapproving mother.
EVERYTHING'S DUCKY (1934): A pair of traveling salesmen cook up lunch to demonstate their dynamic new frying pans, only to discover that they've roasted the family pet.
Leon Errol, Volume 1 (DVD-R)
Leon Errol (1881-1951) was a legend in vaudeville long before he ever set foot on a soundstage. The Australian-born funnyman starred in and directed Ziegfield Follies on Broadway alongside such fellow luminaries as W.C. Fields and Fanny Brice. Hollywood beckoned, and although Errol appeared in such studio features as the all-star Alice in Wonderland (1933) with Gary Cooper and Cary Grant and the classic 1941 Fields' vehicle Never Give A Sucker An Even Break, he found his greatest fame in RKO's popular Mexican Spitfire series co-starring Lupe Velez, in which Errol played the dual roles of Uncle Matt Lindsay and Lord Basil Epping. In Lord Epping Returns, he reprises the role he made famous in the Mexican Spitfire films. Shortly after completing his final short, Too Many Wives (1951), Errol died of a heart attack in Hollywood. He has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
