Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle is an enormously popular comedian who in 1914 was paid the unheard of sum of $1,000 a day plus 25% of profits to make movies. He co-starred with Mabel Normand or his wife, Minta Durfee, in scores of successful comedies, and by 1918 was earning a million dollars a year. Arbuckle was influential in launching the careers of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Bob Hope. His career was destroyed by scandal in 1921, when actress Virgina Rappe died at a party and Arbuckle was charged with manslaughter. He was eventually exonerated, but his reputation was damaged beyond repair. Today, his contribution to the development of American slapstick comedy is widely acknowledged.
Fatty And Minnie-He-Haw (1918): Fatty is courted by an enormous Indian princess, who proposes marriage. He accepts when she draws a hunting knife to his throat. Starring Minnie Devereaux, Minta Durfee; Directed by Fatty Arbuckle.
Fatty Joins The Police (1913): After rescuing the commissioner's daughter, Fatty is rewarded with a job on the Police force. He finds that life on the beat is a little more than he bargained for. Starring Edgar Kennedy, Minta Durfee, Dot Farley; Directed by George Nichols.
Fatty's Spooning Days (1918):
Fatty's Suitless Day (1914):
Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle made his triumphant return to comedy in the six sparkling Vitaphone shorts he headlines in this collection, two co-starring Shemp Howard himself. While Fatty's return was tragically cut short by his untimely passing, another talent was on the rise - and this one sported one unforgettable mug, Shemp Howard. Witness Shemp's career path from bit player to chief second banana in the span of two short years. The 19 shorts found on this 2-disc collection were all shot in Depression Era Brooklyn by the Vitaphone team, providing a magical (and hilarious!) look at a lost time and place.

Born in Australia in 1887, Bevan honed his skills on the stage, specializing in light opera. He made his screen debut some time in 1916 and soon enough was working under the auspices of Sennett, one of the pioneers of screen comedy in Hollywood. The arrival of sound ended Bevan's days as a star but not as an actor, as he continued to play character roles in several classics, including Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca (1940) and William Wyler's Mrs. Miniver (1942), both of which won the Academy Award as Best Picture. Bevan, sometimes billed as William Bevan, would appear in over 250 American films during his career. He died in 1957.

Billy Bevan is fondly remembered as a top silent comedian. He was discovered by Mack Sennett, who also introduced Chaplin, Arbuckle and Langdon to the movie going public. Audiences were guaranteed laughs in a Bevan film due to the solid production and top supporting players like Vernon Dent and Andy Clyde. He is credited with creating at least one classic film routine, "the oyster", in which he battles an oyster in the stew he is trying to eat. Curly Howard, Huntz Hall and Lou Costello all did versions of the same routine. Born in Australia, his noticeable accent made him more of a character actor than comedic star in talkies. A trooper, he continued in small parts until 1950. He died in 1957 just before a resurgence of interest in silent films in the 1960s.
HOBOKEN TO HOLLYWOOD (1926): Billy takes his wife and mother-in-law on a cross-country road trip. Co-stars Vernon Dent. Directed By Del Lord.

THE BEST MAN (1928): At his pal's wedding, Billy turns out to be the worst choice as "best man." Co-stars Vernon Dent.
THE IRON NAG (1925): Billy's polo game becomes more thrilling when it moves into the streets. Co-written by Frank Capra.

Before becoming one of the perennial screen sidekicks during the Western boom of the 1930s and '40s, Al St. John was a top comedy star of the silent era, appearing in many classic one- and two-reel shorts early in his career, often working with his real-life uncle, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle. Four of these classic shorts are included in this special collection.
St. John would reinvent himself as the bearded, grizzled saddle tramp "Fuzzy Q. Jones," in support of Buster Crabbe, Lash LaRue and even John Wayne. So popular was his new screen alter-ego that St. John was frequently billed as "Fuzzy" St. John. By the time of his death in 1963, St. John had appeared in almost 300 movies in a career that spanned over 50 years.
FATTY AND MABEL'S SIMPLE LIFE (1915): Fatty Arbuckle and Mabel Normand are a "poor but honest" couple and St. John her unwanted suitor. Starring Al St. John, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, Mabel Normand; Directed By Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle.

STUPID, BUT BRAVE (1924): Luckless hobo St. John tries to nail down a job but calamity follows him at every turn. Starring Al St. John, Eugene Pallette; Directed By William Goodrich (Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle).
BRIDGE WIVES (1932): In this sound short, St. John plays a husband exasperated by his wife's total obsession with card playing. Starring Al St. John, Fern Emmett; Directed By William Goodrich (Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle).

Bobby Vernon FANDOR
Born in Chicago as Sylvion de Jardin, diminutive Bobby Vernon (1897-1939) starred in almost 200 comedy shorts during his career and specialized in playing well-meaning but gullible fellows who often wound up in trouble but usually ended up with the girl on his arm. He worked alongside such Hollywood luminaries as Lon Chaney, Gloria Swanson, W.C. Fields, Wallace Beery, Bing Crosby and Mack Sennett during his career, which ended tragically with his death at the young age of 42. Nearly 40 years later, he was awarded his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This selection of six vintage slapstick shorts from the silent era showcases Vernon at his bumbling best.

Born in Rhode Island, vaudeville veteran Jack Duffy (1882-1939) appeared in almost 100 silent and sound films, most of them comedy shorts. An expert at makeup, Duffy frequently played characters older than he was, and removing his dentures completed the illusion. Even in smaller roles, his was an unmistakable visage. When acting roles became scarce in the 1930s, Duffy's expertise served him well and he became a studio makeup artist.
